On 22 December 2006 the Institute of Social Sciences organized a national meeting of representatives of local government associations and elected representatives from various states to launch the Association of Local Governance of India (ALGI) in New Delhi. This meeting was the culmination of various activities, including workshops and conventions of representatives of local government institutions, undertaken over a period of three years. A series of discussions were held to receive feedbacks from various stakeholders all over the country on the structure of the network. After much deliberations and discussions a consensus to form an all India network of local government, covering all the 28 states and seven Union Territories was reached. |
The meeting held on 22 December 2006 approved the name of the association, structure, objectives, activities and its memorandum of association. The office bearers as well as members of the governing body were elected. A National Council was also formed. Thus the association came into existence on 22 December 2006 and subsequently it got registered in Delhi under Societies Registration Act of XXI,1860 with the registration no: S/ 58736/2007. The major objectives of this association are to: |
- Act as an advocacy and influence group promoting the interests of local governments and the decentralization process in India.
- Network with other associations and individuals who are concerned with the devolution of functions and powers to local government institutions.
- Undertake research and provide specialized services to the members of the Society on matters related to local government policies and programmes.
- Mobilize and augment the efforts of local government in obtaining their constitutional and legal entitlements.
- Invite experts from the field of public administration, local governance, development planning, socio-economic studies to provide intellectual inputs to the association.

The Members of ALGI include elected representatives of local government institutions, experts in the field of local government and institutions working in the field of local governments. The members of ALGI come from all over India - all the States and Union Territories.
