The Institute of Social Sciences is dedicated to a systematic and scholarly study of contemporary social, political and economic issues from an inter-disciplinary perspective.
It is the Premier Institution of excellence in Research and Training, Local Governance, Gender Equity, Human Rights, Socio-Cultural and many such issues.
The Institute makes its research findings and recommendations available to national and state governments, policy makers, UN organisations, international donor agencies, civil society organisations and workers unions so as to help them to make their decisions based on sound evidence. The Institute seeks to integrate academic rigour with the struggle for change, hence the motto of the organisation Integrating Research with Action.
Evolution of an informed & action-oriented public opinion is our primary aim
To develop itself as a premier institution of excellence in research, training and outreach programmes on participatory democracy and local governance; gender equity; human rights; and issues related to poverty, unemployment, socio-cultural deprivations and the like.
To create informed public opinion, recommend policy, and contribute to the discourses on participatory democracy, local governance, human rights and expansion of opportunities for the socially and economically deprived people. While India’s plural and multi-ethnic society remains the primary concern, the Institute is networking with international organizations and think tanks through exchange programmes and sharing best practices in order to respond effectively to the imperatives of the emerging global society with all its challenges and opportunities.

Human Rights: Anti Human Trafficking and Police Reforms
The increasing incidents of human rights violations in the country, including those by law enforcement agencies, prompted the Institute to address this field seriously. The Ford Foundation support for the programme on Law Enforcement and Good Governance signaled the entry of the ISS in the field in 1999. This support of the Foundation continued till 2006. Within this period a large number and variety of projects and training programmes were undertaken.
