Vision

To develop itself as a premier institution of excellence in research, training and outreach programmes on participatory democracy and local governance; gender equity; human rights; and issues related to poverty, unemployment, socio-cultural deprivations and the like.

Mission

To create informed public opinion, recommend policy, and contribute to the discourses on participatory democracy, local governance, human rights and expansion of opportunities for the socially and economically deprived people. While India’s plural and multi-ethnic society remains the primary concern, the Institute is networking with international organizations and think tanks through exchange programmes and sharing best practices in order to respond effectively to the imperatives of the emerging global society with all its challenges and opportunities.

Featured Thrust Area

Human Rights: Anti Human Trafficking and Police Reforms

The increasing incidents of human rights violations in the country, including those by law enforcement agencies, prompted the Institute to address this field seriously. The Ford Foundation support for the programme on Law Enforcement and Good Governance signaled the entry of the ISS in the field in 1999. This support of the Foundation continued till 2006. Within this period a large number and variety of projects and training programmes were undertaken.

We are looking for sponsors to help us generate awareness and respect for human rights.
