Negotiating Urban Space: Governance and the Informal Economy in Sarojini Nagar

Sarojini Nagar is a popular flea market situated in the capital city of Delhi. It began with no more than 100 authorised shops and gradually expanded into the back lanes of the market as it gained popularity. It’s a cherished commercial hub for trendy clothes, handbags, cheap footwear, home decor, jewellery and more among Delhi locals as well as tourists. Serving as a source of livelihood for many, it houses both legal and illegal vendors, which overtime has become a bone of contention for the state, civil society and the market. Let’s take a deep dive into this issue and look at the key actors at play.
